About ScanMaster
ScanMaster is a free online toolkit for the two file types everybody drowning in: PDFs and images. Everything runs inside your browser.
The problem we set out to fix
Most “free” document sites are funnel machines. You drag a contract into a dropzone, it uploads to an unknown server, waits in a queue, hands you a download link, and keeps a copy of your ID or invoice for a period you never agreed to. Then the site asks you to create an account to remove its watermark.
None of that is actually necessary anymore. Modern browsers can decode a PDF, render every page, re-encode images, recognise text and write a new file — all locally, all fast. ScanMaster is built on exactly that premise.
What you get
- 238 tools across 13 categories — organizing, compression, editing, conversion, security, OCR, image work and utilities.
- 224 of them process files on your device. No network request carries your document bytes anywhere.
- No account, no watermark, no daily quota. Batch jobs are limited to 50 files and 100 MB per file purely to protect your own browser memory.
- Honest status labels. Where an operation genuinely needs a server engine — LibreOffice for Office documents, qpdf for linearization, a GPU model for ML background removal — the tool says so instead of quietly returning your original file.
How it is built
The site is a Next.js application using the React App Router, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS. Document work is done by @cantoo/pdf-lib and PDF.js, image work by the Canvas API with exifreader, heic-to and utif2 for formats browsers cannot decode, OCR by Tesseract.js (WebAssembly), codes by jsQR, qrcode and JsBarcode, and ZIP bundling by fflate. There is no application server for your files, because there is no reason for one.
What we are working on
Server-side conversion for Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, PDF linearization, and machine-learning segmentation for background removal — each as an explicitly opt-in, clearly-labelled feature, never silently swapped in for a browser tool.
