About Character Counter

Character Counter is here for answering a question about a file rather than converting it: characters with and without spaces, plus lines, paragraphs and reading time. The answer is shown on the page — there is no converted file to download. Files up to 100 MB each, 50 at a time, and the work happens on your own machine rather than on a server.

The slow route to answering a question about a file rather than converting it is installing something, making an account and uploading the file; this is the fast route.

How to use Character Counter in 3 steps

  1. Give the tool something to work on: paste the text, or drop in the file that holds it.
  2. Choose whether the tally is words or characters.
  3. Press Count characters and read the answer on the screen; nothing leaves your device to be computed.

What you get with Character Counter

  • Accepts TXT, MD, PDF in one go
  • Answers on the page, with no file to open afterwards
  • Runs in your browser — the file is never uploaded
  • Free to use, with no signup and no account
  • No watermark or logo added to your output
  • Works on desktop and mobile, no install

Character Counter: questions

Can I process several files at once?
Yes, up to 50 files in a batch, each no larger than 100 MB. Results come back together instead of one save dialog per file.
Where does the processing actually happen?
In this tab. The file is read locally, converted or edited locally, and handed back as a download — no copy is sent to a server, so there is nothing for anyone to breach or keep.
Will it work on a phone?
Yes. The layout adapts to a small screen and the processing runs in the mobile browser, so a photo or a downloaded document can be handled on the device it arrived on.
Why is it free?
Because the expensive part — the server farm — does not exist. Processing runs on your device, so the site can stay free without a signup wall in front of it or an upsell in the middle of a job.
